We love plant milk and so many of you… They are important pillars of our drink section and ingredients of cakes and dishes. Most of them are packed in a tetra pack. Despite our small size, we could use a lot, approximately 700-800 boxes a year…
Tetra pack is very comfortable for the food industry and us, people, but with a huge cost for the environment. It is much more like a single-use plastic and not green at all. With the 3 layers (plastic-paper-aluminium) it is a complicated material and it is extremely hard to recycle where recyclable facilities exist…but certainly not in Penrith, but even not in Cumbria anymore… nearest in Lancaster and Newcastle…
The main plan was from the beginning to reduce and do not produce unnecessary waste. This year we decided to exclude the tetra pack including not just fruit and vegetable juices, but plant drinks too. We found a British supplier to order our favourite organic juices in glass bottles …but did not really find better solutions for plant drinks especially without any additives. Knowing we take a risk because we won’t be able to compete with industry-made texture and knowing it will mean more work for us, we decided to make our own. After many experiments, we came out happily satisfied with two types of tasty and foamable plant milk. One will be classic soya, from organic and GMO-free soybeans, the other will consist of organic millet, brown rice, coconut, and almonds. Both without hidden additives… and as our food, …pure, simple, good for health, and better for the environment too…We truly hope most of you will do understand our motivations : )
